The former spinning mill in Freienstein (canton Zurich) was constructed in 1836. When it was closed in the 1990s, the two existing turbines were decommissioned. In 2004, in order to put the weir in the River Töss to use again, a new power station building was constructed and the old gates were replaced with new, automatically controlled ones. Today, the power plant generates electricity from renewable energy sources for the equivalent of more than 500 households.
