The 100 MW Novel S.p.A. plant, located in the Italian province of Novara, is the result of a long lasting partnership between Alpiq (51 % stake) and Geogreen / Radici Group (49 % stake).
The cogenerative power plant provides electricity and steam to the Radici Chimica chemical plant. Alpiq Energia Italia sells surplus energy on the Italian market. Alpiq Energia Italia is responsible for its operation and maintenance.
In 2009, the Novel power station introduced an environmental management system in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 standard. The ISO 14001: 2015 certification, which was entrusted to a nationally accredited third-party organisation, guarantees compliance with the prerequisites defined by the standard as well as their correct implementation.
In 2012, the power plant was certified by Emas (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). Members of Emas commit to improving their environmental performance and publishing an environmental statement in which they report on their (direct and indirect) impact on the environment, their environmental performance and environmental targets.
In 2014, the power plant obtained the certification in accordance with the ISO 45001:2018 regulation, which mandates the continual improvement of its health and safety management system.
In order to retain its certifications, Novel is subject to annual inspections to ensure that the conditions of conformity relating to its safety and environmental management systems are maintained.
In the last years, 15 million euros have been invested to make the plant more efficient and flexible and to reduce its emissions. As a result, the plant has been classified as High Yield Cogeneration (CAR) according to the highest energy efficiency standards. In addition, thanks to DLN technology, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide emissions have been drastically reduced.
Key interventions, therefore, toward the energy transition path and the achievement of the 2030 carbon emission reduction targets.
